About Deanna Wawn

Deanna Wawn is a contemporary jeweller practicing on Gadigal Land, Sydney. Through material experimentation and traditional metalworking techniques, her practice explores the interplay between organic and industrial forms, questioning conventional notions of adornment and the relationship between objects and the body.

Driven by an intuitive and experimental approach to making, Wawn embraces irregularity, texture and repetition as defining elements of her work. Her practice draws on the tension between structure and fluidity, exploring how materials can be manipulated, transformed and reimagined. Familiar forms are abstracted and reinterpreted, resulting in sculptural objects that balance raw materiality with considered craftsmanship.

Central to her practice is an interest in the contrasts that emerge through making: strength and delicacy, control and spontaneity, refinement and imperfection. These opposing qualities inform a visual language that is both bold and tactile, allowing the inherent characteristics of materials and the processes used to shape them to remain visible.

Positioned between contemporary jewellery and wearable sculpture, Wawn's work considers adornment as a form of personal expression. Each piece invites interaction with the body, exploring the shifting relationship between object, wearer and individual interpretation.
